LeRoy Schmidt, 56, rural Utica, died Thursday evening in Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Agnes Catholic Church, Siegel, with the Rev. Lawrence Keating officiating.
The body will lie in state an hour prior to the service at the church. There will be military rites after the service by Ernest Bowyer Post 791. The body will be cremated with burial to be made at a later date.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Kostel Funeral home, Yankton, with a 7:30 p.m. rosary and 8:00 p.m. Scripture there.
Pallbearers will be Lary Schulte, Lyle Schilte, Michael Steinberg, Scott Schmidt and Keith Schmidt.
He was born on November 20, 1930, on the family farm near St. Helena, NE to Henry and Agnes (Betz) Schmidt. He attended high school at St. Helena and Yankton. In 1952, he joined the Marines and served in the Korean Conflict.
He married Analyn Hauck on November 10, 1955 in Sacred Heart Church, Yankton. In 1955, he attended the Nebraska Industrial Trade School in Milford, NE. They operated the Menominee, NE store for five years. In 1963, they moved to Utica, SD, where they were involved in farming.
Survivors are his wife, Analyn; his mother, Agnes Schmidt, St. Helena; six children, Mrs. Bradley (Vicky) Schild, White Sands Missle Range, NM; Mrs. Danial (Kristy) Resifer, Chatsworth, CA; Mrs. Dennis (Kim) Auch, Yankton, SD; Mrs. Rick (Shelly) Gartner, Loveland, CO; Mrs. Kyle (Karla) Plank, Yankton, SD; Gregory Schmidt, Utica, SD; seven grandchildren; two sisters: Mrs. John (Janeanne) Steinberg and Mrs. Richard (Kleone) Schulte; and three brothers: Melvin and Kenneth, St. Helena, NE; and LaVerl "Babe" Schmidt, Volin, SD.
