Son of Mitchell (LeBlanc) White and Victoria Whitefoot.

On 6 Aug 1862 Joseph, a farmer, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 32 years, 7 months and 14 days old.

On 11 Dec 1862, Joseph was sick with typhoid fever on the march to Harpers Ferry as stated in his claim for pension.

Starting 7 Oct 1863, Joseph transferred to Co. K, of the 13th V. R. C., ending his service on 14 Jul 1864.

Later in Mar 1865, Joseph also served in the 8th Vermont Regiment, Company D, ending his service on 28 Jun 1865.

On 1 Jan 1873 Joseph H. White, 43, married Nancy Davis, daughter of Amos and Sally (Arnold) Davis, at Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. There were no children of the marriage, and they apparantly lived separately after 1900.

On 3 May 1912 Nancy, his wife, died at Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. She was buried in North Londonderry, Windham County, Vermont.

Joseph died on 15 May 1914 at Montgomery, Franklin County, Vermont. He was 84 years, 4 months and 22 days old.

He was buried in May 1914 at Enosburg Center Cemetery, in the Messier family lot, with his sister, Judith, and her husband.
