William (Bill) Charles Lawton, 86 of Mauston passed away Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Elroy.
William (Bill) Charles Lawton born on October 20, 1926, on a farm in the town of Summit, the last son of Aaron and Lillie (Diettrich) Lawton. After attending country school, Bill learned to hunt, fish and trap to help his family. On March 28, 1945, Bill was inducted into the Army. He was very proud of his service as a Construction Equipment Operator in Japan. After his tour of duty was complete, Bill went to Milwaukee where he worked as a Master Brewer at the Miller Brewing Co. It was at that time he started collecting old Miller advertising.
In 1955, he bought a small 80 acre farm in Lemonweir Township and planted a tree farm. In 1969, he married Lois Loretta Klas, a school teacher. When Bill retired in 1981, he and Lois moved to his tree farm. He brought his hobby with him and expanded it to any and all brewery items as well as sports, candy soda, automobile and miscellaneous advertising. Bill so enjoyed buying, selling and trading old signs, salesmen's samples and other items. He loved to travel across the country to attend shows and auctions and made many good and loyal friends among the other dealers.
Bill also was very concerned about any old men who were living alone in and around Mauston. He ran errands for them, took them fishing or berry-picking or whatever else they wanted to do, and often brought them home for lunch or dinner.
Bill is survived by his wife Lois, three nieces, Doris Belling, and Lois (Keith) Jahnke, and Jackie Stolarski, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is further survived by Lois' family four brothers: William (Laurene) Klas, John (Jean) Klas, Ivan (Louise) Klas and Peter (Susan) Klas, and her five sisters: Patricia Croatt, Sister M.Joannes, SSSF, Roseanne (Thomas) Watry, Laura (Walter) Weyker, and Verna ( Robert) Leider, one sister-in-law, Jeannette Klas, and many, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is also survived bymany friends and antique dealers.
Bill was preceded in death by all the members of his immediate family including his parents, his brothers David (Agnes Nelson) Lawton and Earl Lawton, his sisters Gertrude (Delbert) Walters, Luella (John) Stolarski, Elva (Walter) Ehlert, Lena (Louis) Nehm and Salina Lawton, many nieces and nephews, cousins and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Crandall Funeral Home, Mauston where friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be at St. Patrick Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Juneau County Peace Committee.
