CHILD KILLED AS TOMBSTONE FALLS ON HER
HAD ACCOMPANIED HER PARENTS TO BETHEL CEMETERY
STONE FALLS ON HEAD
CHILD PASSES WHILE BEING BROUGHT TO BRYAN
Head crushed by a tombstone that fell on her, as she played in the Old Bethel cemetery where her parents were working, little Wanda Hensarllng, four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Evander Hensarling, died a short time later Friday afternoon, while being brought to Bryan for medical aid.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at Brightlight church and interment was made in Brightlight cemetery, Rev. R. L. Brown of College Station had charge of the service and McCullough-Dansby of the arrangements.
Besides the parents, five other children survive. They are one brother, Alton, and four sisters, Marta Ruth, Anita, Louise, and Maybird. The accident which caused the death of the child was one of the most unusual recorded by the county. Mr. and Mrs. Hensarling had gone to Old Bethel cemetery, where Mr. Hensarling had some work to do. They took the child with them. As her parents worked, the child ran about the cemetery, gathering autumn leaves and picking up bright pebbles, running to her mother frequently to show her new found treasure.
After she had made one such trip, excited and pleased she ran away in search of more bright leaves. Suddenly her parents heard a scream and found that a tall tombstone had fallen over, catching the child beneath it and crushing the back part of the head. Just what caused the stone, which is said to have marked the grave of the late Mrs. Bessie Morehead, to topple over is not known.
Rushing to the aid of their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Hensarling realized she had been seriously injured and that medical aid was necessary. They called for help and four neighbors, Mrs. E. U. Peters, Mrs. Lee Andrews, Mrs. Robert Carroll and Miss Ryan got an auto and started for Bryan with the child, intending to bring her to the hospital here. On the way in, however, the little one passed away and the body was taken to the undertaking parlor instead.
