Camp Point, Ill., April 4 - Roy Johnson, 78, retired farmer, was burned to death when his car was struck by a C.B.&Q freight train at a crossing a half mile east and a helf mile North of here early this afternoon.
The impact threw Mr Johnson from the car, and fire which broke out instantly enveloped him. He was dead when help reached him.
Mr Johnson had been driving west on a gravel road and attempted to cross the tracks at a slight elevation.
The train was west bound toward Quincy. Marks showed that the car had passed five feet beyond the trail road tracks and the rear of the car must have been in the middle of the tracks engineer - but to late to halt - when hit.
Mr Johnson was thrown ten feet from the car. Dried weeds and grass, ignited when the car caught fire and set fire to his clothing.
The car was thrown 100 feet from the point of impact to the edge of a field.
Mrs Helen Wickliffe, a teacher at Central High School was the first on the scene. She notified authorities and state Police and the Camp Point fire truck were summoned. The freight train was moved to Camp Point station while firemen put out the blaze.
Mr Johnson was widely known in this community, for many years he farmed south of Camp Point.

Roy E Johnson had lived in Camp Point the Past 10 years since retiring from farming south of Camp Point.
Mr Johnson was born in Liberty, August 18, 1884, a son of Commander P and Ellen Roosey Johnson. He attended the Lost Prairie School south of here. He was a member of the Christian Church here, of the men's Bible Class and of I.O O.F. Lodge.
He was married John 1, 1908. to L Hokamp who died March 22, 1962. He was married to Mrs Grace Todd, who survives.
Also surviving are two step-children. (Per Find A Grave Guidelines I leave out living family members names), Two brothers, Three Sisters, Five step-grandchildren and 11 step-great grandchildren.
