Essie Mae Washington Williams
Birth: Oct. 12, 1925
Aiken
Aiken County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Feb. 3, 2013
South Carolina, USA

Daughter of the late Carrie Butler Clark (daughter of Jasper & Getsey Weaver Butler) & the late Senator James Strom Thurmond. Her mother was a house servant of the Thurmonds in the small Southern town of Edgefield, SC. Little was known about Mrs. Williams until after the death of Senator Thurmond in 2003, even by those within the family. About six months after the death of Thurmond, Mrs. Williams, at the encouragement of her family, publicly announced the identity of her birth father.

Mrs. Williams was raised from a very young age by her mother's elder sister, Mary, and her husband, John Washington in Coatsville, Pa. She met her birth mother when she was about 13 and birth father at age 16. Thurmond funded her education to South Carolina State College and visited her there many times. Additionally, she travelled to his office in Washington, DC several times to visit him.

She dropped out of college to marry Julius Thomas Williams, II, in 1948 and they had a family of four children; however, Mr Williams, a lawyer, died in 1964. Thurmond increased his financial support to the family after Mr. Williams' death. Mrs. Williams was a school teacher for 30 years in California.

At the time of her death she was living in Irmo, SC, Lexington County; Preceded in death by her husband; her son, Julius Thomas Williams; half sister, Nancy Moore Thurmond, and half brother, Willie Clark.

She was survived by three children, three half-siblings, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren.

Note: In 2004, she joined The United Daughters of the Confederacy and in 2005, she became a member of The Daughters of the American Revolutionary War (DAR information courtesy of contributor #46889777)
