James J. Nora

Services for James J. Nora, 92, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 1720 Bristol Drive, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church

Burial will be in the Garden of Our Lady at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ed Siegert-Al Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Nora coached and taught in the Dubuque school systerm from 1923-68. He also officiated high school football for more than 60 years. After his retirement, he worked part-time as a work procurement representative at the Area Sheltered Workshop for five years.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1900, in Iron Mountain, Mich., son of Pietro and Magdaelin (Bugni) Nora. He died at 1:45 a.m. Friday, June 11, 1993 at Stonehill.

He married Irma Ruddy on Aug. 12, 1930, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, Dubuque; she died on Nov. 6, 1989.

He was active in the Elks Lodge 297, Dubuque, served on its youth committee for 40 years and was state chairman of the youth committee from 1960-73. He received numerous Elks awards.

He received several teaching awards including the Teachers Service Citation from the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce in 1965 and the Men's Professional Teachers Association award in 1966.

He was selected to the Hall of Fame for Physical Education and Iowa High School Officials, and in October 1992 he was inducted into the Dubuque Senior High School Hall of Fame.

He was a life member of the National and Iowa education associations and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Joseph's Holy Name Society.

Surviving are two sons, James J, of Peoria, Ill., and Dr. John P. of Saratoga, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Kaye Miller, of Altadena, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Bloom and Mrs. Lena Monroe, both of Iron Mountain.
