Obituary - Verda VaLoie Christensen Nielsen, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grand mother, and friend passed away of pancreatic cancer March 2, 2002, at her home surrounded by family, eight days after her 71st birthday.
She was born Feb. 22, 1931, in Hollywood, CA., only child of Raymond Debbs and Verda Rosetta Woodland Christensen. During her youth, her family lived in Liberty Stake in Salt Lake City. While there, she met her eternal companion, Norman E. Nielsen, and was married by Elder Mark E. Petersen in the Salt Lake Temple, November 17, 1949.
Norman and VaLoie raised their family in Murray, Utah, where she is remembered as a dear wife, wonderful mother and devoted friend who always had compassion for others and a remarkable sense of humor. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a teacher of youth, typist, Relief Society worker and genealogy teacher and leader. She was an active member of the Dairy Meadows DUP. She worked in the Medical Records Department at Cottonwood Hospital. She had a gift for detail and loved her work as a Medical Records Librarian. She was an Accredited Record Technician.
At the age of 15, VaLoie started her life-long quest in genealogy. She has taken numerous courses and assisted many people both near and far. She did extensive research on her family, including years of research on her 3rd great grandfather, Captain Daniel Coon Davis of Company "E" of the Mormon Battalion. She traveled to Petersburg, Renssellaer County, N.Y., Captain Davis's birthplace, and to Niagara County, N.Y., where she found his parents' and sister's burial place and gathered other information. VaLoie and Norman served a Family History Mission in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1998-1999.
She is survived by her husband, Norman; seven children, Linda (Dan) Drake; Sandy (Grant) Hawkins; Sherri (Rick) Baird; Alan (Sarah) Nielsen; Karen (Alma) Hansen; Jill (Ken) Olson; and Kris (Brent) Boswell; 26 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and special friends, Kent and Wanda King, who adopted VaLoie as their sister. Her parents and one granddaughter preceded her in death.
The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Caine of the University Hospital for many years of excellent care. Also, a very special thanks to the doctor, nurses, and staff of IHC Hospice. Finally, thanks to all the "angels" who are friends, neighbors, and extended family for their love and concern during her struggle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9th at l2 noon in the Murray Tenth Ward chapel, 5750 South Nena Way (1/2 block west of State St).
