Birth: Oct. 6, 1867
Essex County
New York, USA
Death: Dec. 30, 1951
Scotts Bluff County
Nebraska, USA

Thomas Edward Hilley was born in Glens Falls, New York on October 6, 1867. When he was eight years old, his parents decided to move from New York to DeWitt, Iowa. They lived there for six years before settling in Ogden, Iowa, when Thomas was fourteen years old.

He moved on west ending up in San Francisco and was living there in 1906 when the big earthquake occurred. Over seven hundred people were killed and an untold amount of damage was done. Uncle Tom was asleep when suddenly his bed began rolling across the room and crashed into the opposite wall. He escaped without injury. He returned to Nebraska, settled on his claim and began to build and improve his ranch. He builds a nice house which was completely destroyed ten years later by a tornado. All of his furniture and other possessions were lost, as well as our mothers. Our father, Thomas Jordan, had died the year before in 1917. His house was moved to the site of Uncle Tom's House.

Uncle Tom managed the ranch for the five years that Uncle Speck and Mother and we four girls lived in Ogden, Iowa. When we moved back to the ranch in 1925, Uncle Tom made a move to Scottsbluff, Nebraska where he lived for the rest of his life. He was always very interested in horses and when he settled on the ranch he bought "Jack", a thoroughbred racehorse to the ranch. The horse was pampered and kept in a box stall. A small herd of wild horse was allowed to run free on the range. The last years of his life were spent at Fall Acres Rest Haven in Scottsbluff. He died there of congestive heart failure on December 31, 1951, and was buried in Fair View Cemetery, Scottsbluff on January 5, 1952. He was never married.
