Thomas was born in Magherafelt, Co Derry, in what is now Northern Ireland to merchant John Derby and his wife Margaret Morrow.
On 4 July 1867 Thomas married Mary Elizabeth Lytle at her home in Maghera, County Derry. Both are listed as Methodists and settled in Cookstown where he worked as a woolen draper (seller of cloths).
In 1888 his eldest son John Morrow Derby immigrated to Philadelphia.
About 1893 John's parents and eight younger siblings joined him in Philadelphia and Thomas again worked in the dry goods business.
Sadly Thomas died just four years later, leaving his older sons to help support their mother and his younger siblings.
