BELLVILLE: EUGENE RICHARD LEEDY, 82, passed away at home- peacefully in his sleep- Saturday, January 26, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Patty Leedy; eldest son- Philip Leedy; parents- George and Gertrude Leedy; brothers- Dale, Albert, and Merle Leedy; sister- Leona (Leedy) Collins; and great-grandson- Justice Jackson.

Gene comes from a large family with seven brothers and six sisters. He was born on a farm in Jefferson Township, Ohio- April 4, 1930- and grew up in Bellville, Lexington and Mansfield. He joined the military after graduating from Mansfield Senior High School in 1948.

Gene became an airplane and engine mechanic in the Air Force and taught at the school he attended, before serving overseas in Germany. Following the Korean War, he returned home and took a job at Omar Bakeries, where he rose to the position of top salesman.

In 1954, he met and married the love of his life- Patty Lowe. Patty gave birth to their first son in 1958. Over the next five years, Gene and Patty had three more sons and one daughter.

Gene started and ran a successful dry cleaning business in the mid-1950s, which he sold when he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He worked at the Post Office for the next 27 years, while working part time as a school bus driver- as well as at Everdry Waterproofing, Aerodyne Battery, Amway, and Roadway Package Systems.

Gene was a loving and devoted husband and father- wholeheartedly committed to his wife and children. As a faithful Christian, he served in his church as a deacon, preacher and song leader, as well as performed countless Christian services- helping the needy and less fortunate.

Gene shared his faith and points of view with the same passion he had for sports. Stanch and avid, he had no problem making himself heard- especially at local ball games. He coached several baseball teams in the 1970s and 80s- leading them to championships- as well as worked as a scout for the Cincinnati Reds. He also held leadership roles in both the Clearfork and Madison High School Booster Clubs.

In an attempt to motivate the Madison High School's varsity basketball team- to improve their game- Gene announced in 1974 that he wouldn't shave again until the team won a championship. Over the next six years, his beard grew longer and longer- and in 1980 when the team finally won a championship- Gene finally shaved.

Loved and deeply missed by his friends and family, Gene is survived by his sons- Mark Brandon Leedy, Paul Alan Leedy, and Giorge Michael Leedy; daughter and son-in-law- Mary Jo (Leedy) Kiser and Morgan Kiser; grandchildren- Jolene and Michelle Kiser; brothers- Bob Leedy, Jim Johnson, Mike Johnson, and George Johnson; sisters- Georgianna May, Elizabeth Waldeck, Jean Almond, Jane Hunkler, and Cindy Martin; as well as their surviving spouses.

Gene's life is being remembered and celebrated at the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. Visiting hours will be Friday, February 8th- from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Burial with military honors performed by the Bellville American Legion Post #535 will follow in Owl Creek Cemetery in Ankeytown. Lunch will be provided for family and friends from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Leedy's 86 Markey Street residence in Bellville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland Church of Christ, Perry Church of Christ, or to the Brookwood Way Church of Christ.
