Robert W. "Bob" Boward, of Smithsburg, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at Washington County Hospital.
He was born in Hagerstown on April 19, 1919, the son of the late William Henry and Emma Crunkleton Shindle Boward.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glessner and Kenneth Boward.
Robert was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, where he belonged to the Meridian Sunday school class.
Robert served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was also a member of the Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.
He retired as superintendent of the Northern Avenue Post Office.
Robert was active in youth sports for many years. He was president of Valley Little League and treasurer of the National Little League in Hagerstown. Robert also holds Maryland state records in both track and field.
He was also a member of the Antietam Fire Co.
He is survived by his wife of more than 59 years, Charlotte Marie Sparks Boward.
Robert is also survived by a daughter Cheryl Lee Nichols, and husband, Danny W., of Whitmire S.C.; three sons, Gary Richard Boward of Smithsburg, Larry Eugene Boward of Hagerstown and Jeffrey Lynn Boward and wife, Jennifer (Haugh), of Hagers-town; seven grandchildren, Hannah E. Boward, Jeremy W. Nichols, Joshua R. Nichols, Trista Boward Kruse, Shannon M. Boward, Katie Hauver and Laura Beth Compher; dear friend of the family, Grace M. Hauver; nephew, Steve Stouffer; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with Pastor Ken Hawes officiating. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to services. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
