Richard Donald "Dick" Williams, 82, a resident of Amherst, passed away Monday, January 28, 2013, at New Life Hospice Center in Lorain, from complications due to Parkinson's disease. He was born October 14, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York.
Dick graduated from Freeport High School in the class of 1948. He later attended Wright State University in Dayton. He served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hyades during the Korean Conflict as a radio operator. Dick was employed as a marketing manager in the heating and air conditioning industry in several cities. In Elyria he worked for Smith-Jones Company. In 1979, he and his wife Zelah (nee Mills) moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked for McGraw-Edison. He later became a retail manager for Arizona Health Foods, before retiring in 1998. They resided in Arizona for 23 years, before returning to Amherst, where he had made his home for the last 10 years. Dick's love of music was always present in his life. As a youngster, he sang in the St. Paul's Boys Choir in New York City. In high school, he performed in musicals. He continued singing in church choirs and was a member of the Amherst Community Chorus for the last nine years. He was a loyal member of the BPOE Lodge #335 in Phoenix. He served tirelessly in all of the offices and as Exalted Ruler in 1993 to 1994. In Elyria, he was a member of the BPOE Lodge #465 and acted as co-coach of their Ritual team. Dick was named Elk of the year in 2012. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, where he belonged to the Vincentions and Catholic Golden Agers. He also was a member of the Oberlin AARP, Friends of Amherst Library, 31 Card Club, Amherst Historical Society and the Parkinson's Support Group. Dick was a man who loved having his family around.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Zelah; his daughter, Laura Mulholland; son, Tom Williams both of Coca Beach, Florida; step daughters, Shelley (Greg) White of Vermilion, Gina Markos of Lakewood; Kitty Tiberi of Peyton, Colorado; step son, Frank Tiberi of San Francisco, California; granddaughters, Brooke (Dave) Koopman, Taylor Tiberi- Clawson, Shiela Mulholland; grandsons, Liam Markos, Sean White, Dustin (Sarah) White; sister, Joy Burke of Lake Placid, Florida; brother, Paul Marsala, Jr., of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul, Sr. and Kay Marsala (nee Nuzo).
Friends may call Wednesday, January 30, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M., at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be held Thursday, January 31, 2013, at 9:30 A.M., from the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 A.M., at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Reverend Father Bill Padavick, will be the Celebrant. Full Military Honors will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
