Obituary Notes:

Mrs Grace Redmond Pickard

Mrs. Grace Redmond Pickard, 57, wife of Wayne W. Pickard, died at the family home, 8 South Street, Saturday, October 30, 1948, following a stroke of apoplexy, which she suffered the previous day.

Mrs. Pickard, daughter of the late William and Nora Redmond, was born in the town of West Sparta, November 28, 1890. She received her early education in West Sparta rural school and later entered Dansville High School from which she was graduated, following which she entered and was graduated from the Normal Teachers' Training Class at Nunda. She was united in marriage to Mr. Pickard on June 17, 1914, and to them were born three children. For a number of years the family resided in the community in which both Mr. and Mrs. Pickard were born, and then moved to this village.

Mrs. Pickard who was long affiliated with the West Sparta Methodist Church and its organizations became an attendant at the Dansville Presbyterian Church and members of its Sunshine Circle, after moving to this village. She was a member of Deborah Chapter O.E.S. and for some years, she had been employed at the Up-to-Date Dry Cleaning Company.

She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Raymond Bryant of the Ridge; two sons, Robert and Howard Pickard, both of Sparta; one sister, Mrs. Thomas W. Slaight of Geneseo, and six granddaughters.

Funeral services were held from the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and from the West Sparta Methodist Church at 3 o'clock. The Rev. Ralph Webb of Sonyea officiated. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery, West Sparta. The bearers were Ray Chasey, Clarence Kenney, Basil Kenney, Elmer Dennison, Clair Shull and Sherry Burns.

Mrs. Pickard made many friends during her girlhood, and these, together with scores of others who came to know and love her down through the years, remained ever steadfast and true.

She was a devoted wife and mother, an inspiration to those with whom she came in contact, and old and young alike took great pleasure in gathering at her home, where her unusual charm and hospitality were source of keen enjoyment, Grace, as she was familiarly known, spread sunshine wherever she went. She was optimistic, generous, and thoughtful of those about her. Her ever-ready smile and good deeds characterized a life which will always be held in cherished memory, a life that will be sadly missed.
