JAY C. PICKARD
Jay C. Pickard, 80, prominent Livingston County resident, died at his home at Byersville, Town
of West Sparta, Thursday, February 7, 1946, following more than a year's illness.
Mr. Pickard was born in the township in which he died, on November 23, 1865. In 1888, he entered the grocery business with the late William Libby, and following Mr. Libby's
death, he conducted a general store at Byersville for many years. ;
In early life, he took an active part in athletics, participated in many contests and had the distinction of winning every foot race in which he was a contestant, with one exception.
A staunch Democrat in politics he represented his township as town and county committeeman and was elected to the office of Supervisor in a strong Republican town in 1901. Ha served urn supervisor until 1912, was again elected to the office in 1930 and served for four years. He also held the office of highway superintendent for a number of years.
Mr. Pickard was instrumental in the work of incorporating Oak Lawn Cemetery, and he acted as its caretaker a long as health permitted.
As a talented musician he was widely known for his vocal rendition of the old Moody and Sankey hymns, and he gave generously and freely of this special gift by singing these hymns at funeral services where his voice brought comfort and hope to hundreds of bereaved families.
Mr. Pickard's genial disposition, happy nature and friendly manner, and his aim to lend a helping hand to neighbors and friends, made him one of West Sparta's most esteemed citizens.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Fannie Libby Pickard; three sons, Supervisor Lynn E. Pickard, Wayne and Glen Pickard of Dansville; a brother Elmer Pickard of Caledonia, several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services held from the Grover & Wood Funeral Home of this village, Sunday afternoon at two o'clock and from West Sparta Methodist Church at three o'clock, were very largely attended. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery, West Sparta. The bearers were John Whitenack, Ora Chasey, Daniel Linzy, Ward Hamsher, Ebbie Kennedy and Elmer Hartman.
