William Henry Thurston, one fo the early settlers of Argyle, died at his home in this village on Monday, Nov. 9, after a long illness.
The deceased was born in Syracuse, New York, Jan. 1, 1836, and shortly after his birth his parents returned to their former home in Berkshire, England. When about 18 years of age he returned to America, living for a time at New York, Chicago and New Orleans, coming from the latter place to Argyle in 1857, and has since then made this his home.
He enlisted in the war of the rebellion from Lafayette County in April 1861 and was the first man to enlist from Argyle. He served in Co. I. 3d Wis. until honorably discharged from the service, taking part in 27 major engagements.
On June 12th, 1859 he was married to Miss Mary Ann Coble, and to them eleven children were born. One died in infancy and the oldest daughter within the last years, his wife having died in 1905. He is survived by nine children, twenty-five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The children are Mrs. F.E. Rogers, of Manitowoc, John and Dan, Rifel, Col-Theodore, Eugene, Merrill, Richard, Frank, of Argyle and Leo of Basco, Wis.
He suffered a stroke of paralysis on June 13, 1913, and after being confined to his bed for some months, recovered sufficiently to be about, but on Oct. 25 he was taken with his last illness, during which he expressed himself as enjoying peace with God, and fell asleep enjoying that peace to awaken on the other shore.
The funeral was held at the Methodist church yesterday afternoon, Rev. C.W. Harrop conducting the services.
