Mary Ellen Papkin, 86, who traveled the world vaudeville circuit as "Princess Yvonne," died yesterday at the Cheltenham Nursing Home, where she had been living recently.

Born in Poolesville, Md., she met her husband, Irving, at a county fair in Rockville, Md., when she was 18. They were married and quickly formed the act "Doc Irving and Princess Yvonne."

The couple worked with magicians who were considered world masters. They were friends with the legendary Harry Houdini and after his death worked with Houdini's brother, Theo Hardeen.

The couple toured the Orpheum, Keith and Loew's Vaudeville circuit, playing across the United States and in Europe. They performed at the White House for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and European royalty.

The couple's daughter, Yvonne Loretta Papkin Levine of Philadelphia, was incorporated into the act as the "world's youngest mind reader" when she was 3.

"They had a complete review of magic and mysticism. There were dancers, singers and an orchestra," Levine said. "The high point of the show was when she did her mental telepathy."

As part of Mrs. Papkin's act, she would read the numbers from hidden dollar bills, identify items inside women's handbags and tell members of the audience about their distant relatives.

"They don't have acts like that anymore," Levine said.

After her husband died in 1978, Mrs. Papkin moved to the Edwin Forrest home, a 25-room mansion built at 4849 Parkside Ave. by the great Shakespearean actor Edwin Forrest. Two years ago she moved to the nursing home because of poor health.

Surviving, in addition to her daughter, are two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. today in Roosevelt Cemetery, Old Lincoln Highway and Roosevelt Boulevard.
