John Dickens Ice
Birth: 1812
Monongalia County
West Virginia, USA
Death: Mar. 30, 1865
Barrackville
Marion County
West Virginia, USA

Son of John Ice and Nancy Dickens; husband of Rebecca Snodgrass.

John was murdered by the Union forces just as the civil war was coming to a close. The federal troops had received word that someone had harbored a well-known Confederate, Peter Righter, the previous evening.

The troops arrived at John's home and questioned the entire family. John denied such allegations but was found guilty of harboring a Confederate and taken to the bridge over Buffalo Creek and shot dead, falling into the creek bed below. The scoundrels left poor John where he fell, leaving his family to make the funeral arrangements.

Upon hearing the news, President Lincoln condemned the actions of the troops calling them murderers.

A trip to the cemetery by Find a Grave Contributor Gia reveals that John's headstone is no longer legible. I thank her for her worthy effort.
