Mr. Hunter passed away on Sunday, April 29, 1990 at Jasper, at the age of 84.
He was born and reared in Noxubee County, MS and he was a certified public accountant by profession. Mr. Hunter was a graduate of The University of Mississippi (1926), received his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University of New Orleans in 1938, and later participated in the twenty-third advance management at Harvard.
He practiced public accounting from 1926 until 1932 and was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; and was a member of the State Bar beginning 1938. In 1969, Mr. Hunter retired from the Presidency of the Humble Pipeline Company after more than thirty-seven years with the company that company and other affiliates of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, now Exxon Corporation. During these years he had made his home in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Tulsa, Shreveport and Houston. Since 1980 he had been a resident of Sam Rayburn, Texas, and member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Jasper.
He married Theresa Irvine, a secretary at Humble Oil in New Orleans. Previously she had taught High School English at DeRidder High School in DeRidder LA. There was a strict policy about company dating and Phelan and Theresa had to keep there relationship hidden from the public. She retired from the company after they married. Served as President of the Shreveport Club. Served a president of Humble Oil until Jan 1, 1970. Where he had been for more than 37 years. Oversaw the building of the Alaskan Oil Pipeline. Phelan had a beautiful house designed for his new bride in New Orleans, but before they could move in the company transferred him to Tulsa OK., the only thing the newlyweds were able to do was through a big going away party in the new house. They never moved in.
In 1983, Phelan Hunter gave money for new Stained Glass Windows for the Elon Baptist Church in Macon Miss. He traveled to Macon for the celebration. Windows were given in the memory of his father, Phelan Hunter Sr., and his mother, Josephine Hunter Hunter. Henry McElroy Hunter was one of the founding members of the church in 1882.
