BIG STONE GAP, Va. Fleet L. Tate, 90, of the Crackers Neck community, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday (June 26, 2010) at The Place in Kingsport.
He was the son of the late Peter and Laura (Gilley) Tate. He was a lifelong resident of the Crackers Neck community.
He retired from Westmoreland Coal Company, Central Supply Division, after 34 years of service. He was a member of Modern Woodmen and the Ruritan. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater.
He attended Big Springs Baptist Church in the Crackers Neck community.He was an avid fly fisherman and hunter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Grindstaff Tate; eight brothers, Guy, Elijah, Charlie, Howard, Bob, Woodrow and James Polk Tate; three sisters, Mollie Tate, Easter Tate Vanhook and Ida Tate Fraley.
Surviving are his two daughters, Kathryn Davidson and husband, Ronnie of Mount Carmel and Linda Cates and husband, Charles of Houston, Tex.; his son, Joseph Fleet Tate of New York, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Laura Davidson and her husband, Jason Radmacher, Jeffrey Davidson and wife, Misti, Lisa Whitman and her husband, Darryl and Kristi Johnson and her husband, Jesse; five great-grandchildren, Justin, Casey, Colby, Austin and Conner; brother-in-law, H.T. Grindstaff; three sisters-in-law, B.B. Tate, Mildred Tate and Ann Rose; and Fleet was a very special uncle to his nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Cedar Ridge Freewill Baptist Church (1413 Crackers Neck Rd., Big Stone Gap, Va) in the Crackers Neck community.The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Jason Radmacher officiating.
Military rites, by local V.F.W. and D.A.V. Posts and the Virginia National Guard Honors Team, will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Davidson, Matt Cooper, John Cooper, Chase Cooper, Jesse Baker and Tessa Burton.
Holding Funeral Home is serving the Tate family.
