Gertud Von Le Fort
Birth: Oct. 11, 1876
Death: Nov. 1, 1971

Poet. Her strong religious convictions dominated her writing. Born in Minden, Prussia, the daughter of a Prussian major, she was tutored at her family's Mecklenburg estate until age 14; her preoccupation with her family's centuries of history sparked an interest in history which she viewed as a means of understanding the present more clearly. At age 32 she began informal university studies attending historical and theological lectures in Heidelberg, Berlin and Marburg where she frequently was the only female attendee. Shortly before her 50th birthday the the strictly Protestant educated von le Fort conversted to catholicism; the conversion was unusual in that for her it meant no break with her Protestant past, but rather a reunification of the separated denominations. At about this time her literary success emerged-she had been writing and publishing poems and short stories since childhood. Among her best known works are: Hymns to the Church (1924), Das Schweißtuch der Veronika (1928) and The Magdeburg Wedding (1938). She was always opinionated, against church and against national interests. Her criticism of the Catholic Church in her novel The Ring of Angels (1946) annoyed some in church circles; from 1938 her works under the Nazi regime were unwanted. The University of Munich awarded her an honorary doctorate in Theology in 1956. Recipient of numerous literary awards and acknowledgments, among them Germany's Bundesverdienstkreuz with a star designation. Spent the last third of her life in Oberstdorf, Allgäu region of Bavaria, Germany. (bio by: Fred Beisser)
