John Carey Hall served in the British Consular Service in Japan from the 1870s to 1910s. His final posting was British Consul General in Yokohama.

He died in England in 1921 and was cremated. His wife, Agnes, had died in Yokohama in 1913. He requested that his ashes be interned in his wife's grave in Yokohama. Agnes was the daughter of Charles Wycliffe Goodwin, a famous Egyptologist and judge of the British Supreme Court for China and Japan.
