Birth: 1817, British Virgin Islands
Death: Nov. 13, 1881
Hyogo, Japan

George French was Chief Justice of Sierra Leone from 1867 to 1875. From 1877 until his death in 1881 he was Chief Justice of the British Supreme Court for China and Japan based in Shanghai.

He graduated from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1842 with a MA. He was called to the bar of Lincoln's Inn in 1844 and practiced in London before his appointment to Sierra Leone.

He fell ill in early 1881 and went to Kobe from Shanghai to convalesce. Despite a brief recovery he died in Kobe in November 1881. The date of his death is wrongly stated on the gravestone most likely because the original stone was destroyed.

He was originally buried in Onohama Cemetery in the Kobe Foreign Concession. The graves from that cemetery were moved to the Kobe Foreigners' Cemetery after World War II.
