He was he son of James and Mary (Marcy) Dyer. He grew to adulthood in his native state. He must have moved to New York about the same time as his parents. His oldest child was born there.
He served as Captain of the Militia during the war of 1812.
He resided in Ohio during the 1820's and early 1830's. When his fathers estate was settled, 11 Jan 1837, James was said to be of Michigan. On 10 Nov 1841 he bought 80 acers of land from the government (land office Galena) in Twp 45 N, R 2E, Sec 25 Winnebago County Illinois.
