An Episcopal priest, Father Whitcombe was an active priest until his death, but served more as a circuit rider after leaving St. Luke's in Dixon in about 1914, serving parishes in several nearby towns. He was most publically associated with St. Peter's in Grand Detour, Illinois where he spearheaded a completed renovation of the very old chapel (the second oldest Episcopal church in Illinois) with the son of Leonard Andrus, John Deere's partner. He is buried in the church lawn.
He also did public relations for a local utility, sold life insurance, sat on the City council, and was Regional Counsel for the Lincoln Highway Association, State Chaplain for the Elks, a serious Mason, and very active on Civil Defense during WWI.
