This monument marks the initial center line held by the 11th New Jersey, commanded by Colonel Robert McAllister, when it was positioned along the Emmitsburg Road by Major General Daniel Sickles (at the time of the battle there was a small orchard here). When the attack of Longstreet's Corps swept through the Peach Orchard south of this position, the 11th New Jersey switched position to the left and south of the Klingel House. Here it absorbed the assaults of Barksdale's Mississippi brigade to the south and Wilcox's Alabama Brigade to the right. The regiment took a terrible pounding, losing every officer wounded or killed, along with over half the enlisted men present. The remnants of the 11th slowly withdrew under the pressure of the Confederate, finally breaking to Cemetery Ridge with other retreating elements of the III Corps. The regiment fielded 275 men at the start of the battle. It ended with 38 dead or mortally wounded, 109 wounded and 12 missing. Colonel McAllister and Lieutenant John Schoonover were wounded, Major Philip J. Kearny was mortally wounded, and Captains Andrew Ackerman, Dorastus B. Logan and Luther Martin were killed.
