Rachael was a child of John Wesley Varvel and his wife, Rosannah A. Bowens. Family records indicate she was born in 1848 (this does not agree with gravestone). She married first to William McClanahan, Jr.; a son of William McClanahan and his wife, Rebecca Mitchell. They had eight known children; three sons and five daughters. After William's death, Rachael married a Mr. Thoroman.
