Roman Catholic Prelate. Best remembered for having been the Primate of Poland during the years of Solidarność. Ordained priest in 1956, he devoted himself to the study of canon law reaching a considerable prestige in the Polish Church. On March 4 1979, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Warmia and after just two years, Archbishop of Warsaw and Gniezno. In 1981, his appointment as Primate of Poland aroused much controversy because he was suspected of collaborating with the communist regime. In the Consistory of February 1983, His Eminence Jozef Glemp was elevated to the rank of Cardinal and appointed Ordinary of the faithful of the Eastern rite resident in Poland. He was also a member of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, the Pontifical Council for Culture, the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura and Abbot of the "Ordo Sancti Sepulcri Hierosolymitani equestris". During his apostolate the Cardinal Glemp has received several awards, including the "Order Orla Białego", the most prestigious acknowledgment of Poland, an honorary degree from Villanova University in Philadelphia, Seton Hall University in South Orange, Loyola University of Chicago and University of Bari. According to contemporary historians he supported the Polish church during the democratic change in the country in 1989, and the entry of Poland into the European Union in 2004. Josef Glemp died because of lung cancer at a hospital in the Polish capital. (bio by: Lucy Caldarelli)
