Born Robert Philip Engemann, after attending Brigham Young University, he formed the vocal group The Lettermen with singers Tony Butala, Jim Pike in 1959. Signed to Warner Brothers Records in 1960, Their first two singles had little success until they signed with Capitol Records which produced the hits, "The Way You Look Tonight" (1961) and "When I Fall in Love" (1961). Over the next seven years, the group had 11 Hot 100 hits and 12 Top 40 songs such as "Come Back Silly Girl" (1963), "Theme From a Summer Place" (1965), "Goin' Out of My Head" (1966) and "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" (1967). The group also performed over 200 live concerts a year, had 32 charted albums, 11 Gold Records and five Grammy nominations. In 2001, they were inducted into the Vocal group Hall of Fame. Engemann was the first to leave the group in the late 1960s, wanting to concentrate on his growing family. He was an elder in the Mormon Church and spent many years in the alumni insurance program for his Alma Mater Brigham Young University. He died at age 78 from complications of pneumonia suffered after heart bypass surgery. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
