Calvin Cherry Ball was born around the year 1795. He used the name "Cherry Ball" on his paperwork, including his US Census records. His mother's maiden name was Bethana Cherry, and his father's name was James Ball.

He was a veteran of the War of 1812, having served as a Private in Beaufort Reg't (Latham's), North Carolina Militia. He enlisted on 28 Sep 1814, when he would have been about 19 years old. After the war ended, he received two bounty land grants as compensation. In his retirement, he qualified for a soldier's pension.

He grew up near Tranter's Creek, in Beaufort County, NC. He married on February 15, 1832, according to his military pension application. His wife's maiden name appears to have been Sarah "Sallie" Ann Floyd.

In the 1850 US Census, he was listed as a resident in the Town of Washington, Beaufort County, NC, where his occupation was described as "Night Watchman". This small town was originally called "Pea Town", when it was founded. Later it was called "Beaufort Town", before it was finally renamed as "Washington".

Various children showed up in his household, on the U.S. Census records, when he was elderly. Rachel Ball might have been either his daughter, or his granddaughter. William Allen Ingold was his grandson, who appears to have been born in September of 1862. Virginia Thomas was listed as Cherry Ball's daughter on the 1880 US Census, but due to her young age she was probably either his granddaughter, or an adopted daughter.

Cherry Ball (1795-1882) appears to have had a nephew named after him, who was Calvin Cherry Ball of Tennessee (1842-1945). His nephew was the son of his brother named Niles Ball, Sr. (abt 1796-1880). His nephew has a cemetery marker at FindAGrave Memorial #117075593.

Cherry Ball's family first appeared in America in the area of Stafford County, Virginia. This area was originally called Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Some researchers say Cherry Ball's family originally came from England, but other researchers say that the Ball family came from Scotland. The Ball families of England and Scotland both had a large number of sea captains, whose descendants colonized the coastline of North Carolina. Many of the descendants from both of the Ball families later moved further inland, into Tennessee, and further westward.

He and his siblings were mentioned on the estate paperwork for his mother's farm in Beaufort County, NC. Her farm was subdivided among her children, upon her death. A map of the farmland was included with her legal paperwork.

Cherry Ball's cemetery site location is unknown. His name does not appear in the Beaufort County Cemetery records:
