TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Neoma Irene Colpitts, 95, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Orchard Creek Assisted Living in Traverse City, MI, with her daughter and son-in-law at her side.
Neoma was born on November 3, 1917 in Flint, MI and earned her associates degree from Flint Junior College in 1937, B.A. from North Central College 1939. On June, 14, 1941 she married A. Hunter Colpitts. Neoma was a Kindergarten teacher in Flint, MI, a teacher of grades 1 & 2 in Mouton, Ohio, and a substitute teacher in the Wapakoneta, Ohio Public Schools.
She was a former member of Crescent Ave. United Methodist Church, Fort Wayne, IN and also served as a second grade Sunday school teacher. She was an associate member of High Street United Methodist Church in Muncie, IN and was actively involved in the aftermath of the High Street Church explosion in 1978. Neoma was supporting member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse IN. Neoma was a member of P.E.O. Chapter, E.J. As Hunter's loyal partner, Neoma lovingly embraced the many years of duties, responsibilities, joys and pleasures of the role of "The Minister's Wife". Prior to Neoma's move to Traverse City, she enjoyed many years as a property owner in the wonderful community of Oakwood Park, on Lake Wawasee. Neoma, Hunter, her family and friends made many happy memories there in their beloved little red cedar log cabin that they had built on the water. Later they constructed their second home next to the cottage and lived contently there full time after their retirement.
Surviving are her son, Craig Harrison (s.o. Faith) Colpitts of Ballston Spa, NY; daughter, Sarah Jane (Steve) Hall of Traverse City, MI; brother, James (Esther) DeMott of Peoria, AZ; sisters, Pauline Ballou of Kalkaska, MI and Thelma (David) McKellar of Grand Blanc, MI; grandchildren, Benjamin (Shelli) Finfrock of Grawn, MI, Katherine Finfrock of Traverse City, MI, Carrie Colpitts of Chicago, IL, Matthew Colpitts of Ft. Wayne, IN, Leah Masters of Cedar, MI and James Hall of Fife Lake, MI; great-granddaughter, Rebekah Hlavka of Grawn, MI; brother-in-law, Donald Vogelsberg of Chelsea, MI and many specially loved nieces and nephews.
Neoma was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Lona DeMott; husband, Dr. Rev. A. Hunter Colpitts in 1994; sister, Juanie Vogelsberg; brother-in-law, Kenneth Ballou; nephew, Kenneth "Chip" Ballou.
Service is 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Syracuse Calvary United Methodist Church, 801 South Huntington Street (Rt. 13) with a calling two hours prior with The Rev. Dale Mendenhall and Rev. David Herr officiating. Interment will be on Saturday January 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
