Margaret J. Couchie
Services for Margaret J. "Peg" Couchie, 55, of 1085 Overlook Dr., will be at 1 PM Monday at Christ United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joan Skelley- Watts officiating.
Mrs. Couch or was pronounced dead on arrival at Alliance City Hospital at 3:25 AM Friday, following a brief illness.
A registered nurse, she had been a staff nurse at Alliance City Hospital for several years; assistant supervisor in the hospital's operating and emergency rooms, and an instructor and head resident of the hospital's former school of nursing. Mrs. Couchie had also been employed at the former White Cross (now Riverside ) Hospital in Columbus.
She was born August 3, 1920, in Marlboro, to Perry W. and Pearl Slabaugh Freshley, and lived in the Alliance-Marlboro area all of her life. Mrs. Couchie was a 1938 graduate of the former Marlboro High School, where she named and edited the first edition of Scenario, the school yearbook, and was a 1941 graduate of Alliance City Hospital School of Nursing.
She was a 35 year member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she was secretary of the Crusaders Sunday School Class, a member if Jean Conover Circle, past president of the United Methodist Women, and organizer of the church's crib room.
Mrs. Couchie had served as a community volunteer for various health agencies and United Way fund-raising programs.
She was president of Alliance City Hospital Nurses Alumni, past president of National Cabinet of Mount Union Women, former director of Alliance Women's Club, past president of C.P. Chapter of P.E.O. Sisterhood; a member of the executive committee of the Alliance Chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Association of America; and a member of College Women's Club, Campus Circle, and Alliance Church Women United.
Mrs. Couchie is survived by her husband, Wilbur E., whom she married Dec. 15, 1945; a daughter, Mrs. John (Jean) Burnquist od Uniontown; a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Kathleen) Baum of Marlboro; and a brother, Robert B. Freshley of Wadsworth. She was preceded in death by a son William C., in 1963.
Friends may call from 6 to 9pm Sunday at Cassaday and Turkle Funeral Home. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the time of services. Burial will be in Marlboro Cemetery.
