He was born in 1880 as Martinus Jacobus van Dijk in the village Zevenhuizen, northeast of Rotterdam, in the central part of the Dutch western province Zuid-Holland, son of Johannes van Dijk and Anna Hanemaaijer.

He married on 29 June 1900 in her bride's birthplace De Lier, in the southwestern part of Zuid-Holland to Adriana van der Lugt, daughter of Gerrit van der Lugt and Gerritje van Duijn.

On 27 December 1900 their son Johannes died in De Lier, 3 weeks aged. On 30 March 1902 their daughter Gerritje was born in De Lier, but died 11 days later. On 7 July 1904 their daughter Anna was born in Rotterdam, on 15 July 1905 Gerritje, on 24 July 1906 Gerrit, on 26 July 1907 Johannes and on 12 July 1908 Gerritje.

On 22 February 1915 Martinus van Dijk (34 y, occupation: par...), his wife Adriana (34 y), their children Anna (11 y), Gerrit (8 y) and Gerritje (6 y) arrived on the SS Rotterdam at New York, Ellis Island. Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Rotterdam and their destination is Colton in South Dakota, where Adriana's brother Teunis v.d. Lugt is living.

In 1930 Martin J Van Dyk (49 y), his wife Adrianna (50 y) and their children Gerret (23 y), Elizabeth (14 y, born in South Dakota) and Johnnie (10y, South Dakota) resided in Buffalo, Minnehaha County, in the southeastern part of South Dakota.
