The Passing Of A Pioneer
Thomas Bracken Dies at His Home in Willow Springs, April 23.

The earthly life of a good citizen closed in the passing away of Mr. Thomas Bracken in the evening of Thursday, April 23, in the 76th year of his age. The decedent was the son of Charles and Sarah Bracken. He was born Nov. 4, 1838, at the family homestead, Walnut Grove Farm, town of Willow Springs. He obtained his education in the common schools and the (then) Platteville Academy. His father, Gen. Bracken was a competent surveyor and the son prepared for that profession, and in the spring of 1862, went to the Northwest territories for the purpose of engaging in government work. Congress had made no appropriations for that work, and the young man was disappointed but remained some nine years in the far west. Mrs. Thomas Bracken's maiden name was Elizabeth Benson, daughter of Richard Benson, who brought his family from England to the United States in 1849, and lived in Willow Springs, where friends of the family had long been established.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bracken have one son, who survives them, and lives at the old homestead. In 1871, Mr. Bracken was converted in what was known as the Hewett revival, and shortly afterwards became an active member of the P.M. church. He held different offices in the church, including Sunday school superintendent.

Mr. Bracken was thoroughly conversant with the history of Wisconsin and political history in general. He was a student of men and affairs and was greatly concerned with the uplift of humanity. His mind was well stored with useful knowledge, and it was always a pleasure to meet and converse with him. He was a Democrat, who rejoiced when his party turned from dead issues and triumphed in the advocacy of the principles of progressive government. He was ever true to his conviction of right and duty, and the world is better for his having lived in it.

The funeral was held on Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock with burial in the township
