Robert Foster, II the son of Robert and Nancy [née Patton] Foster, was born January 29th 1776 in the area near Long Cane in the Abbeville District of South Carolina. He father was a member of General Pickens' Command during the Revolutionary War; fighting with the Tories near Patterson's Bridge on Long Cane Creek just miles from where Robert grew up. His parents where Scots-Irish Presbyterians and helped organize both Long Cane and Cedar Springs A.R.P. churches in the early 1780's.

Robert Foster, II married Miss Elizabeth Clark with whom he had the following known children:
Susanna Clark Foster (1810 – 1890)
Margaret Bates Foster (1812 – 1892)
Mary Caroline Foster (1822 – 1847)
John Edward Foster (1819 - 1859)
Nancy Patton Foster
