Born on Apr. 8, 1834, at Danville, Virginia, to Jacob Thompson & Anne Catharine (Patton) Coles. Married Martha Elizabeth (Jones) Leftwich [widow of John Wiley Leftwich] on Dec. 23, 1873, and had several children, including Katharine Patton, William Patton, and Annie Lyle.
