Mrs. Melissa Higgins Guffey, 84, wife of the late Larry B. Guffey, died last Wednesday at her home on University Drive. She had been in poor health for the past seven years.
The daughter of the late David and Margaret Holloway Higgins, Mrs. Guffey was born Oct. 2, 1872. She married Larry B. Guffey in March of 1900 and four children blessed this marriage.
Mrs. Guffey was a devoted member of the Duke Memorial Church, giving willingly of her time and energies to the advancement of her church. She spent her life in the service of her Lord and bringing love and happiness to her children and friends.
Mrs. Guffey is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Marquette, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Ruby Horton, Somerset, and Mrs. Lillian Wilson, Somerset, and one son, Roy Guffey, Ludlow; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Creekmore and Mrs. Lucy Haynes, both of Somerset, Mrs. Roberta Van Winkle, Danville; one brother, Joe A. Higgins, Somerset; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday in the Duke Memorial Baptist Church. The Rev. H.D. Smallwood and the Rev. W.W. Kelley conducted the services. Burial was in the Somerset Cemetery.
