Mrs. Barry Rites Held Saturday
Funeral services for Mrs. Raymond Barry, who died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 1950, at Waseca Memorial hospital after an illness of three months, were conducted Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the Pfaff funeral chapel with the Rev. Marvin Nordneier officiating. Special music was furnished by the ladiesí quartet of the Eastern Star: Mrs. A. C. Miller, Mrs. Harold Smith, Mrs. Wallace Peterson, and Mrs. Ben Senske, with Mrs. E. J. Graben organist. Graveside rites by the Eastern Star were held in the Pfaff funeral chapel immediately following, led by Worthy Matron and Patron, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Kanne.
Pallbearers were Arthur Brisbane, Dr. G. E. Fastle, Lloyd Hemstock, Edgar Johnson, Paul Stucky and Emerson Ward.
Mrs. Barry is survived by her husband, Raymond T. Barry, and three children: Robert LeRoy of Britton, S. D., Donald Hartley of Rochester, and Raymond T. Jr., of Waseca. There are two grandchildren, Allen and Timm, sons of Robert and Mabel Barry of Britton. She is survived by eight brothers and sisters: Mrs. Grace Withrow of Minneapolis, Mrs. Clara Engstrom of Young America, Leslie G. Timm of Minneapolis, Mrs. Eleanor Holmberg of Watertown, Mrs. Helen Lichttenenger of Glenwood, LeRoy C. Timm of Ames, Iowa, Mrs. Edna Goetsch of Gaylord, and Dr. Franklyn W. Timm of Memphis, Tenn. Her mother and father preceded her in death.
Viola Timm Barry was born in Arlington, Minn., on May 22, 1898, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. F. Timm. She attended the Arlington pubic schools and graduated from the Arlington high school. She attended the Collegrate Business college in Minneapolis, after which she held a secretarial position with the University of Minnesota Extension Division. On Sept. 6, 1919, she was married to Raymond T. Barry in Minneapolis.
Mr. and Mrs. Barry moved to Waseca in November, 1921. In the summer of 1933 they bought and moved to the property known as Winterís Point.
During her life Viola Barry was a gifted and enthusiastic worker in community affairs.
She is perhaps best known to the public as the local chairman of the annual Christmas Seal drive. In 1948 she was made an honorary member of the State Board of Health in recognition of her outstanding work in tuberculosis control.
At one time Deputy Commissioner of the Girl Scouts, Mrs. Barry was very active in founding the scouting movement here in Waseca. She helped form the original Girl Scout Council and was a member of the Council until 5 or 6 years ago, when her tenure expired. At various times she worked on the Membership committee, the Camp committee, was Training chairman and Program chairman.
She was an active and devout member of the Calvary Episcopal church, serving at the time of her death as president of the Auxiliary. She was past president of the Guild, and had long been an active member of the choir. In 1945 and 1946 she served a two year term as president of the Womenís Auxiliary of the Faribault Deanery.
Mrs. Barry was past president of the Monday Study Club and had been a member of that organization for the past 27 years. At the time of her death she was chaplain in the Eastern Star. An ardent worker in the League of Women Voters, she was a member of the Waseca Service committee this year. She also worked annually in the membership drive of the Waseca Concert Association.
In losing Viola Barry, Waseca loses a spirited and enthusiastic community leader. It may truly be said that she leaves an abounding legacy of good works, loyalty, and faith, and a delightful and enduring memory in the hearts of the many that were her friends.
