Malvern C. Holland, M.D., age 76, of Greenville, died Nov. 11, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital.

Family graveside services were held at Woodlawn Memorial Park on Nov. 13, 2003, officiated by the Rev. Dr. DeArmond Canaday.

He was born in Simpsonville, son of the late Samuel Townes Holland Sr. and Isola McHugh Holland.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Nicholson Holland; his children, Dr. Malvern C. Holland Jr., Timothy Mark Holland, Ruthann Holland Zins, Carolyn Holland Clark, Elizabeth Yeargin Holland-Meurer, M.D.; and grandchildren, Thomas Joseph Zins Jr., Olivia Catherine Zins, and Madison Holland Meurer.

He was predeceased by his brothers, E. Minton Holland and Samuel Townes Holland Jr.; and his sister, Nettie Ruth Riddle.

Dr. Holland practiced ophthalmology in Greenville from 1960 through 2001. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree from USC in 1948. He graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from the Duke University School of Medicine with a degree in medicine in 1951. In 1951, he served Locum Tenens at Maynard McDougall Memorial Hospital in Nome, Alaska. He completed his internship and residency in ophthalmology and otolaryngology in the U.S. Public Health Service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Sr. Surgeon (commander) in the U.S.P.H.S. He was board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a lifetime fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and International College of Surgeons. He was a member of Sigma XI Honorary Society, S.C. Medical Association, Greenville County Medical Society, SMA, AMA, and International Association of Ocular Surgeons. He was an Honorary Staff member at Greenville Hospital System.

The Fountain Inn Rotary Club honored him for "recognition of great success in the field of ophthalmology and skilled services to the citizens of the Piedmont Area." The Greenville Lion's Club honored him "in appreciation and recognition for distinguished service to the Lions Club Conservation Program," and he was honored for "grateful appreciation for participation in the Knights Templar Foundation."
