The happy home of the William Hillen family was suddenly turned into deep shadows of sorrow last Sunday, when Verona, the 15-year-old daughter passed away in death, after only an illness of a few days. She died at St. Agnes hospital, Fond du Lac, where she had been taken last week Friday, suffering with an acute case of appendicitis.

She was born in this city on August 10th, 1902, and has always resided in this city, where she was the life and sunshine of her home and will be greatly missed by her schoolmates and her many friends.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the late home, where Mr. Wm. Luehrs of New Holstein eulogized the deceased. The pall-bearers were six of her Sophomore classmates: Carl Ruedebusch, Donald Heider, Milan Helmbrecht, Walter Naber. Lloyd Eager, William Bruder. The Mayville Ladies and Maennerchor choirs sang several appropriate songs at the house and graveside on beautiful Graceland.

To show in what high esteem she and her family was held, the funeral was largely attended and the High School turned out in a body. The floral tributes were many and beautiful.

Besides her grief-stricken parents she leaves one sister, Miss Alma, who graduates tonight from the local High School.

We join with many friends of the mourning family in extending heartfelt sympathy.

Mayville News June 6, 1918

The Mr. & Mrs. Wilhelm Hillen family of Mayville were deeply and painfully grieved when their daughter Verona Irma Hille unexpectedly and suddenly died Sunday June 2nd.

The so young deceased was born August 10, 1902 in Mayville and brought her age to 15 years, nine months and 22 days.

She fell ill Saturday May 25th and it turned out to be an abdominal infection. Friday last week she was taken to the St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac and operated on that same afternoon. Her condition did not improve after the operation, but rather worsened, so that there was little hope of recovery, and on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. she breathed her last.

Besides her grieving parents, she also leaves behind one sister, Alma Hillen.

The body was brought to Mayville Monday, and preparations made for her burial, which took place Wednesday afternoon from the house of mourning with especially large and general participation.

Wilhelm Luehrs, former principal of the college in New Holstein, Calumet County, Wis., gave the deceased a poignant eulogy in the house of mourning and the Teutonia men's choir and mixed choir performed three funeral songs, whereupon the long funeral procession to Graceland Cemetery formed, where Professor L. S. Keeley gave a farewell speech to the deceased, so young, who was one of his students.

The following of her schoolmates acted as pallbearers: Carl Ruedebusch, Wilhelm Bruder, Milan Helmbrecht, Donald Haider, Walter Naber and Lloyd Eager.

The following people came from afar for the funeral: Ralph Matson of Racine; Mrs. Wilhelm Dittmar and daughter, Irena, Mrs. H. Muehle, Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Muehle, Luella and Verna Muehle of Beaver Dam.
