George served as a paratrooper in Europe during World War II with the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team. Upon returning to the states, he served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He remained in the armed forces reserve for 30 years, retiring as Lt. Col.
He completed the Newport News Apprentice School as Ship Carpenter, received the B.S. degree in Industrial Arts Education at Virginia Tech, earned a masters degree in Industrial Education from Virginia State University and completed the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
He taught Industrial Arts at Culpeper County High School where he met his wife Dene Mills. He served with the Virginia Division of Apprenticeship for 18 years, becoming Virginia's Apprenticeship Program Director. George returned to teaching in Henrico County Schools where he retired in 1982.
George was a member of Colonial Place Christian Church, the 82nd Airborne Division Association, the Masonic Lodge - Glen Allen 131 and Shelby 162, E.H. Gill Royal Arch Chapter, #50, Johnson Commandery #14 Knights Templar and ACCA Temple Shriners. He served as reporter for the Glen Allen Shrine Club for several years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dene Heflin; children, Steve and Wendy Heflin and Ginger and Doug Pridgen; grandchildren, Holly, Stacey, Steve Jr., George Heflin and Jordan, Tyler and Mackinsey Pridgen; sisters, Billie Jacobs and husband, Ray of Virginia Beach and Hope Inskeep and husband, R.J. of Culpeper; sister-in-law, Ethel Heflin of Orange.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Park.
