"Nearly two months ago the subject of these lines going from his comfortable home in a storm, to discharge a Christian duty, caught a severe cold which rapidly developed into pneumonia…After lingering in a critical condition, he suddenly had a relapse and died peacefully on December 22.
He was a native of Luzerne County, having been born in Plains Township December 31st, 1838. He was a grandson of the late Hon. Charles Miner, and a son of Stephen F. and Charlotte Abbott. He was educated in the common schools of this vicinity and Wyoming Seminary and West Chester Academy.
Through the instrumentality of his future father-in-law, the Rev. William Wyatt, he was brought to Christ in 1859 and united with the Methodist church. On the 3rd of January 1860 he married Lizzie Wyatt, who was taken from him November 22nd 1874.
On the 29th of April 1878 he was married to Miss Delia, daughter of O. H. P. Archer, Esq., of New York City.
Dr. Abbott was admitted to the Wyoming Conference in 1863, his first charge being at Candor Broome, New York. In 1866 he was transferred to the Troy Conference and assigned to the Ash Grove Church in Albany. In 1869 he was transferred to the New York Conference and assumed the pastorate of Trinity Church in Newburg.
In 1872 he was assigned to the Fourth Street M.E. Church and three years later assigned in St. Luke's Church on 41st Street. in 1878 he was assigned to the Twentieth Street M.E. Church.
In 1877 the Syracuse University conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity.
The remains of Mr. Abbott arrived in Wilkes-Barre from New York City via the Central RR of New Jersey. The funeral was held from the home of Charles A. Miner and interment was in the Hollenback Cemetery."
Rev. Abbott's first wife, Elizabeth Wyatt, and his only child died in 1874. He married Elizabeth in 1860 and in 1878, he married Mary Delia Archer.
