Hugh Lawton Cook
Birth: Feb. 16, 1901
Death: Apr. 20, 1976

Hugh Lawton Cook, Born Feb 16, 1901 to Edmond Hunton and Maggie (Caldwell-Wright) Cook. Edmond had 7 daughters and 3 sons from his first marriage to Nancy Catherine Jacobs-Cook.

Hugh was only 2 years old when his Father passed away, leaving him without a father and his mother widowed at only 29 years of age.

Maggie became ill and her mother, Easter Swagerty-Caldwell, put Hugh into the Holiness Industrial Children's Home in Scott, Bourbon, KS, that was run by, Mary Osborn-Carter, the daughter of Easter's sister, Sallie Swagerty-Osborn.

Maggie went to work at the orphanage to be near him. He remained there until he was 16 years old, when a new person came to run the orphanage. He felt sorry for Hugh and gave him some money and told him to run away.

Hugh joined the military and was stationed in Coblenz, Germany in 1920. In 1926 he married Hazel Louisa Pennington. They had 3 children they raised in Newalla, Oklahoma; James Lawton, Jacqueline Elnora "Jackie" and Gerald Francis "Jerry".

Hugh died of a heart attack at the age of 75 while painting his living room ceiling. His wife died 11 years later.

Hugh was a blacksmith and later a car mechanic, owning his own garage. He loved to fish, and always had a huge garden. His Grandchildren remember his delicious catfish dinners. He enjoyed socializing and playing dominoes at the local pool hall in the adjoining town of McLoud, OK.
