George Washington Hazzard

Civil War Union Army Officer. Appointed as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th United States Regular Artillery on July 1, 1847, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on March 31, 1850, and served as Adjutant of the unit from 1855 to 1857. Advanced to Captain in 1859, he was in command of the unit's Batteries A and C during the early portion of the Civil War. During the Spring 1862 Peninsular Campiagn, he was given command of the artilery brigade of the II Corps 1st Division. He led his unit through the Seven Days Battles at the end of June 1862, and on June 30 he was wounded during combat in the Battle of White Oak Swamp, dying 42 days later from his injuries. (bio by: Izzebella)
