Phillip ‘Mike' Moore Jr.
Phillip Moore Jr. passed away Monday, Dec. 31, at Kindred Hospital in West Los Angeles. His wife of 12 years, Robyn, was by his side. He was 78.
Phillip is better known to all as "Mike," a nickname his grandfather gave him that stuck for his entire lifetime.
His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, at the All Faith Chapel, Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake. An Elks' memorial service will follow at the Rose Garden, Desert Memorial Park. A reception will follow after the memorial services at the Elks Lodge, 201 E. Church St.
Mike was born on April 11, 1934, in Syracuse, N.Y. He joined the Navy in September 1951 and advanced from seaman apprentice to chief warrant officer (CWO3). He served aboard four ships, USS Norris, USS Yazoo, USS Hunley and USS Enterprise. His shore duty included service at CINCNELM London, England; NS Argentina Newfoundland; Naval Correspondence Course Center, Scotia, N.Y.; HA(L)-3, Binh Thuy, Vietnam, and two tours at the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake. He retired from the Navy on Aug. 31, 1974.
Mike then worked as a contractor in support of various China Lake projects. He became a federal employee as a logistics management specialist working on several missile programs. He received several awards, most notably the Distinguished Civilian Service Award upon his retirement in June 2000. He continued his service to his country after retirement as a contractor supporting projects at China Lake. He was a true patriot.
Mike had many part-time jobs bar tending, which he was very good at. He loved talking to people and always had a story to tell. He was very generous and could always be counted on to aid a person in need.
Mike was a Mason and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge. He was very active with the Elks having served as bar manager, treasurer, and bingo manager. In addition to these positions, he spent many hours doing maintenance chores, cooking, and general cleanup.
Mike loved walking and interacting with his dog. He supported several animal organizations.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Jean, his parents Phillip and Elizabeth Moore, and sister Shirley Kodya. He is survived by his wife, Robyn; sons Jim, Mike and Dale; daughters Leslie Schmidtcrans and Laurie DesJardin; stepsons Scott, Gary, Eugene and Shawn Schreckengost; stepdaughter Wendy Trainer; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Flowers may be sent to Holland & Lyons Mortuary, or donations may be made to the Humane Society for the Ridgecrest Animal Shelter in memory of Mike Moore.
