Chandler Cowles, son of Luman Cowles (1789-1823) and Eunetia Pardee (1794-1869) was born in Kensington, Hartford County, CT on Dec 25, 1816.
In 1838 he founded C. Cowles & Company in New Haven, CT. The company has evolved from a manufacturer of lanterns for horse drawn carriages to a world-class, precision metal stamping company, producing components for U.S. and Japanese automakers.
On Jun 17, 1841 he married Susan Evelina Sabin. She was born on Sep 23, 1817 in Milford, New Haven County, CT. She and Mr Cowles had five children, all born in New Haven: Emily Jane (Aug 8, 1842), Anna Louisa (Jan 11, 1844), Elizabeth Sherman (Jun 2, 1845), Susan Chandler (Feb 24, 1847) and Edward Luman (Nov 24, 1849).
Susan died at the age of 36 on Jul 29, 1854 in New Haven. She was buried in the Grove Street Cemetery.
Mr Cowles died at the age of 49 on on Mar 16, 1865 in New Haven. He was buried in the Grove Street Cemetery.
