He was first married to Amelia Ann Friddle on 8 Feb 1844 in Newton Co GA. They were the parents of Mecie Ann Burks Carroll, John Brinkley Burks, Silas Asberry Burks, Joseph William Burks, Thomas Jefferson Burks, James Henry Wilson Burks and Dock Edward Burks. About 1863 the family moved from Henry Co Ga to Fayette Co GA. Permelia Ann died there on 1 Sept 1881.
His second marriage was to Martha Emma Gilbert. They were the parents of Lelia Octavia Burks Martin, Rev Gilbert Cleveland Burks, and Emma Lenora Burks Bennett. The family was living in Cullman Co Al by 1892.
