After living and worked in more than 50 countries around the world, he decided settle in Rio de Janeiro in 1983, where he was the author of the decoration of the stairs of the Convent of Santa Teresa at the historic center of the bohemian district of Lapa, an iconic work made with thousands of tiles that gave him fame around the world. He was author of pictures and decorations with tiles, and was recognized for his work with the stairs of the convent of Santa Teresa, also known as "Escadaria Selarón" ("Selaron Stairway"), linking the neighborhood of Lapa to Santa Teresa and became one of the three more important tourist spots in Rio de Janeiro, along with Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado and the Pan de Azúcar(Sugarloaf). He decorated the site to mark the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. The work includes tiles from 60 countries, and covers the staircase of 215 steps and 125 meters long. Some of the tiles were replaced regularly to give a changing nature of the work. He made his greatest work painting and selling nearly 25,000 paintings, often with the image of a pregnant black woman. Next to the stairs, was the home and studio of the eccentric artist, where he frequently taken pictures with tourists. He also used this place to paint their pictures. In May 2005, the site was declared a historical monument in Rio de Janeiro and he received the title of "Honorary Carioca" by the city.
