Before becoming a self-employed carpenter, he worked in the Rush Canning Factory, picked strawberries, managed Ridgley's local grocery store, was a part time barber and a semi-professional baseball pitcher for the Yankee's Farm Team. In 1944 he moved to Cassville and managed the Newman Farms. He began his carpenter business in 1948 and retired in 1977.
