Born in Honan Province, China, he rose Communist Party ranks to become premier of the People's Republic of China from 1980 to 1989 and general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party from 1987 to 1989. He championed a number of political and economic reforms but was ousted for his role in creating conditions which led to the student pro-democracy movement; he was stripped of power for supporting the students during their 1989 pro-democracy Tiananmen Square protests.
